Environmental conservation charity, Odonata Foundation, has been endorsed as the official new Land Manager of the Crown Land on which Winton Wetlands is situated.
This decision follows an extensive exploration and ‘expression of interest’ process, led by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), to identify key candidates capable of moving the Winton Wetlands Masterplan into its next designated phase.
Odonata is assuming management of the site under the continued leadership of current CEO Dr Dennis O’Brien, with the intention that it will be ‘business-as-usual’ while Odonata gains a deeper understanding of the site’s ongoing operational and financial needs.
DEECA and the Winton Wetlands Committee of Management are enthusiastic about the potential opportunities they expect to arise from these new arrangements.
Odonata is particularly enthusiastic about exploring more of the opportunities outlined in the Master Plan drawn up for Winton Wetlands more than a decade ago.
Odonata sees the work of the Winton Wetlands project aligning well with its own mission to retain and restore as much of Australia’s biodiversity as possible, while also finding innovative ways to connect the public with nature and ecotourism.
Odonata expects to work closely with key stakeholders over the months ahead, bringing further energy, oversight, and expertise to help embed Winton Wetlands as a locally and globally significant site for conservation and ecotourism in north-east Victoria.
