Annual Kangaroo surveys conducted by our field staff in September 2024 have revealed a substantial reduction in the density of kangaroos at Winton Wetlands. Compared to the 2023 results of 1.3 kangaroos per hectare, 2024 survey results have determined an estimated density of 0.7 kangaroos per hectare.
This result is believed to be due to the relatively dry weather conditions preceding the 2024 surveys and the resulting “draw-down event” on the reserve, with an accompanying increase in the available area for kangaroo populations to inhabit. (Basically, less water on the reserve equals more dry land available for the roos.)
These observed annual changes in kangaroo density within the reserve reinforce the importance of collecting fauna data over a long period of time, using standard and repeatable survey methods, rather than just observations at a single point in time.
The 2024 survey is the sixth year in a row of collecting reserve wide kangaroo survey information. The annual data being collected is adds to our understanding of the true drivers of kangaroo population changes and the associated management implications.
More detail on the latest survey findings will be made available in the near future.
