It’s Spring! So, wattle we do at the wetlands?

Sunday 1 September heralds the first day of Spring and also Wattle Day – a day to celebrate Australia’s many beautiful wattle species.

Wattle is a generic term describing plants from the genus Acacia, the largest plant genus in Australia with close to 1000 different species!

Acacia is derived from the Latin ‘point’ or ‘thorn’, as many wattles are quite prickly in an effort to protect foliage from herbivores.

Here at Winton Wetlands, it’s the perfect time for a bush walk around some of our many trails to enjoy the bright blooms of our Acacia species such as Rough Wattle (Acacia aspera, pictured here along Winton Wetlands’ Wildflower Walk), Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha), Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata) and Cinnamon Wattle (Acacia leprosa).

Thinking about planting some yourself? Golden and Silver wattles both feature in the indigenous plants guide now on sale over the counter at the Mokoan Hub & Café, 652 Lake Mokoan Road, Winton North (Victoria, Australia).
